Although the safety factor approach is increasingly replaced with probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) as a tool for dimensioning safety measures, comparison of the safety factor approach and PRA shows that these two approaches should be seen as complementary rather than as competitors. In this chapter, we discuss the theoretical assumptions underlying the safety factor approach and illustrate its use with examples from structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, and toxicology.
