Title: Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender young people’s experiences of PE and the implications for youth sport participation and engagement
Abstract: A long-standing rationale for physical education (PE) is that it introduces young people to the knowledge and skills necessary for post-school physical activity and sport participation. This chapter draws upon data from young adults reflecting back on their experiences of PE and sport at school. The data were generated as part of a wider initiative by the Rugby Football League (RFL) to help inform policy and practice around issues of diversity, equity and inclusion. The chapter considers lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender, LGBT young people's experiences of PE and school sport, how these experiences may influence their current involvement in physical activity and, importantly, highlights the implications for inclusive PE and youth sport practice. Feminist scholars have provided important insight into the ways in which homophobia is used to police gender boundaries, (re)producing patterns of inequality in PE contexts.
