Title: The Reception and Acculturation of Buddha Statue Folklores in China - Focusing on ‘washes Ashore’ or ‘emerges from the Waters’ -
Abstract: 본고에서는 ‘‘해안표착 및 수변출현’ 즉 ‘물 속에서 불상이 나온 요소’에 한정하여, 같은 형태를 가진 설화가 동아시아 불교전래의 이념에서 이러한 전승의 성립과 변용이 필요했던 의미를 살펴보았다. 한국 또는 일본의 불교설화는 중국의 한역 불전과 밀접한 관계가 있다. 그러므로 이들의 출전과 전승의 문제, 이에 대한 연구는 동아시아 불교문화의 전파와 교류에서 의미를 가질 것이다. 해당 설화의 출전과 설화의 전승을 밝힌다는 것은 곧 그것을 통하여 설화 전승의 전개와 설화가 수용된 각각의 지역에서 변화하고 변질된 것을 구체적으로 연구해볼 수 있기 때문이다.
『고승전』의 석혜원ㆍ석혜달전의 전승은 이후 중국뿐 아니라 한국과 일본을 포함한 지역에서 해당 설화의 원류로 파악된다. 이 때 나타난 상(像)이 아육왕상이라는 점은 『법원주림』, 『집신주삼보감통록』과 같은 후대의 전승에서도 불상의 ‘해안표착 및 수변출현’과 아육왕 전승이 서로 갖고 있는 밀접한 관련을 찾을 수 있었다. 무엇보다 불교 발생지인 인도에서 국가불교 이념의 체현자라는 아육왕에게 부여된 성격은 동아시아 국가불교에서 ‘시원’으로서 아육왕을 구분짓게 하였다. 역사적인 개념이라기보다는 당시 사람들이 믿고 있던 이념의 시작, 외래종교인 불교에 의해서 규정된 이념상의 시작인 것이다.
