Title: Potato virus Y: general characteristics [Solanum tuberosum L.; Italy]
Abstract: The main features of Potato virus Y (PVY), type member of the genus Potyvirus, family Potyviridae, are described. In particular, its biological, morphological, citopathological and epidemiological properties are reported. The distinction between the diverse existing strains or pathotypes of the virus is discussed with reference to the outbreak of the PVY sup(NTN) (necrosis tuber necrosis) isolate in Italy, which causes severe necrotic symptoms in potato tubers. The use of diagnostic tools based on biological assays, serology, molecular tests and their possible combinations to identify the virus isolates at strain level is discussed
