Abstract: The issues associated with the proposed purchase by the Australian National Gallery of George Braque's Grand Nu of 1907 (some, like Raymond Cogniat, date it 1907-081) are emerging: How valid is ideological purchasing in order to demonstrate a turning point in art history or an artist's career? Does the purchase of transitional works subjugate aesthetic values to art-history? If one is to rely upon art-history as an arbiter, may one not ask whether art-history has not, itself, a history, and if so, should we not be asking, at times, who, not what, makes art-history?
