Abstract: The purpose of this chapter is to discuss preliminary estimates for new ships. In determining the main dimensions for a new ship, guidance can be taken from a similar ship for which basic details are known. This is known as a basic vessel and it must be similar in type, size, speed, and power to the new vessel. It is constantly referred to as the new design is being developed. When a shipowner makes an initial enquiry, he usually gives the shipbuilder four items of information: type of vessel, deadweight of the new ship, required service speed, route on which the new vessel will operate. The intended route for a new vessel is very important for the designer to know. Another aspect that needs to be considered is the air draft. This is the vertical distance from the waterline to the highest point on the ship. It indicates the ability of a ship to pass under a bridge spanning a seaway that forms part of the intended route.
