Title: Diversity Within Diversity: Considering Immigrant Employees and Immigrant-Salient Characteristics
Abstract: Diversity, however, is considered a “complex” discipline (Page, 2011), which explains some of conflicting results in the organizational diversity literature. Immigrant employees are examples of such complexity. However, research on immigrant employees in organizations and organizational diversity is limited, and does not seem to capture the uniqueness of immigrants as a group. In this paper, we argue how an immigrant salient characteristics, including nationality, acculturation, and linguistic characteristics, may affect work-related processes such as identifying with others in workgroups. We also conduct a literature review to examine to what extent immigrant employees are identified and how often immigrant-salient characteristics are considered in articles published in high-ranking management journals. Lastly, based on our analysis of the immigrant workforce literature in general and our discussion on immigrant- salient characteristics, we offer suggestions and recommendations for future research on immigrants employees.
