Title: The Inheritance of Precarious Labor: Three Generations in Waste Picking in an Indian City
Abstract: Precarious labor forms are not immune to change. The question, however, is how to actively mould them for the better. In this paper, we search for answers by tracking three generations of a family in waste picking in an Indian city. Their lived experiences of poverty, migration, and work inheritance have a story to tell about how precarious labor can be reformed from within. Through collectivization, waste pickers in the city could improve their work status and working conditions. Their efforts have reduced the severity of precariousness embedded in waste picking even as the work form has prevailed across generations.
