Title: Analysis and design of electromagnetic band gap structures with application in planar antennas
Abstract: This paper describes a method to improve the return loss, gain, and directivity of a planar antenna. Our approach is based on using electromagnetic band gap (EBG) structures within a dielectric substrate. We designed two type of antennas: a reference one - a standard patch antenna- and a patch antenna having an EBG substrate, both of them work at an operation frequency of 15 GHz. The reference antenna had a directivity of 4dBi and a gain of 4dB. The antenna with EBG substrate achieved a directivity of 8dBi and a gain of 8dB. This gain and directivity improvements were achieved because EBG substrates suppress surface modes at a frequency band near to 15 GHz as it will be discussed.
