Abstract: Appropriate toileting is an important skill for independent living. A number of toilet training procedures have been shown to be effective to increase toileting skills among children and individuals with disabilities. However, behavioral problems such as self-injury, aggression, and noncompliance exhibited by trainees may complicate training and decrease the likelihood of a successful outcome. In addition, barriers to implementation and performance problems by parents or others conducting the training can also create difficulties. In this chapter, we describe some of the common problems associated with toilet training and briefly suggest some potential solutions.
