Title: The absence of paternal masculinities and fatherhood in tourism studies
Abstract: There is an absence of the analysis of paternal masculinities and fatherhood in tourism research, and gender aware tourism research almost exclusively debates feminine identities. The aim of this working paper is to conceptualise and theorise the social roles of fathers and male identities within family tourism research and draw comparisons with advances in this regard in the field of leisure studies. Our working paper and larger project seek to broaden the gender debate to be inclusive of paternal subjectivities and fatherhood within the context of tourism. We seek to challenge the existing dominant modernist gendered dualism, to be inclusive of a male voice in the gender debate, and to challenge some of the assumptions about men's, and particularly fathers' travel and holidays. Our paper promotes different ways of thinking about men's travel through a focus on fathering and fatherhood, and contributes to a more balanced and critical understanding of travel in family life.
