Title: A Review of Contemporary Science and Technology Policy Research: Recent Trends and Future Directions
Abstract: The societal impacts of scientific and technological advances – whether desirable or undesirable – have been one of the primary foci of contemporary policy research, much of which employs distinct interdisciplinary approaches. In this paper, we seek to characterize the topical, methodological, theoretical, and geographical trends of recent science and technology policy studies. Utilizing reputable scholarly journals within the related subfield of policy science, we review the recent research articles on science and technology policy as they relate to policy development, while paying particular attention to capturing any systemic patterns of trends. We conclude with a discussion of the various ramifications of our findings for future research directions and, in the process, highlight issues including technological innovation and diffusion, science and technology for sustainable energy development, evidence-based decision- making, and information technology and cyber security.
