Title: Educational Mismatches in Higher Education and Labor Market Effects
Abstract: This article addresses educational mismatch and provides a review of literature related to educational gap, gender, and labor market issues ; a theoretical and empirical overview of educational mismatch and over-education ; and considers the degree to which knowledge acquired in higher education corresponds to that required on the job. The central question is the meaning of an observed mismatch in terms of the match between required and available skills. The study includes a quantitative description of trends related to educational mismatches in selected European countries and reviews the latest evidence from CHEERS, OECD, and Croatian Employment Office (CEO) databases. Empirical evidence shows that educational mismatch has worsened in the majority of developed countries, but the CHEERS study indicated less dramatic changes in the relationship between higher education and labor than that suggested by discussions about macro-trends.
