This thesis proceeds along a complementary line - that of modelling QCD, with the aim of identifying its dominant degrees of freedom. The fermion sign problem resulting from minimally coupling temporal background gauge fields to Nambu-Jona-Lasinio models is addressed in this work by establishing a novel, systematically ordered approach. The modifications to the the Polyakov loop are in direct connection with the fermion sign problem. Furthermore an effective coupling of quark densities of different flavours is induced. This mechanism, most likely also present in QCD, produces finite contributions to flavour off diagonal susceptibilities.Read More
