When added to concrete, finely distributed and in humid conditions, silica reacts chemically with the free lime (portlandite) in concrete develops very high strength concrete and / or concrete of very high durability. The contribution of silica fume to any property of hardened concrete may be expressed in terms of an efficiency factor, K-factor. This K-factor for silica fume in concrete can be defined as the number of parts of cement that may be replaced by one part of silica fume, without changing the property being studied, normally the compressive strength. The present paper deals with the efficiency of silica fume in concrete, through the compressive strength to water cement ratio relations for these concrete mixes at varying percentages of replacement (2-80 wt percent). The results show that K-values decrease with increasing percentage of replacement. For the 28-day compressive strength the K-factor is in the range from 6, 35 to 2, 61 for the percentage of replacements varying from 5-15 wt percent. This obviously means that 2, 61-6, 35 kg cement may be replaced by 1, 0 kg silica fume in a given concrete mix without impairing the compressive strength.
