Title: Engineering Applications of the Analysis of a Spherical Shell
Abstract: In a companion paper, a set of two integral equations have been established for a spherical shell under axisymmetric loads. This set of equations may be solved numerically by using Nystrom method, which is a generally applicable quadrature technique. In this method the integrals are approximated by the closed Gauss-Chebyshev quadrature rule. After the locations of the quadrature points are established, the integral equations are transformed into a system of linearly independent equations which may then be solved by using the Gauss Elimination method. The integral equation method may be applied on two types of engineering application. One is the analysis of a shell, and the other, the optimal design of a shell. They will be illustrated in two examples.
