Abstract: The dissertation combines theories and empirical findings of classic motivation psychology with relational models theory. Across seven studies, it demonstrates that individual preferences for specific interpersonal relationships depend on the fundamental human needs for affiliation, power, and achievement. Conversely, it shows that distinct relational structures elicit specific motivation. It thus provides a framework for creating and designing interpersonal relationships and social motivation.
