Abstract: This study aims to investigate the manner of the characters in the Crash movie in flouting Grice s conversational maxims and the implicit meanings (implicatures) hidden behind the flouting. This study belongs to qualitative study since the data were collected analyzed and described in the form of words. The data of this study were selected from the script of the Crash movie that was taken from an official database of movie script (www.IMSDb.com). The flouting of the conversational maxims in this movie was done by most of the characters that comprised of Black American and White American coming from middle to upper class living in L. A. The flouting of the conversational maxims in this movie happened solely due to the difficult situation faced by the characters and not because of the different socio cultural background existing among them. The results of this study show that the characters in the Crash movie flouted all of the four conversational maxims with the maxim of relation as the most frequently flouted maxim. From the nineteen cases of the flouting of the conversational maxims the maxim of relation was flouted nine times (47.37 %). Another maxim that was flouted many times is the maxim of quantity. The maxim of quantity was flouted seven times (36.84 %). The less flouted maxim is the maxim of manner that was flouted two times (10.53 %). The least flouted maxim is the maxim of quality that was flouted only once (5.26%). The characters in the Crash movie flouted the conversational maxims in several manners such as by showing irrelevant responses by giving uninformative responses by giving obscure responses and by providing fallacious responses towards their interlocutors questions or remarks. The characters in the Crash movie flouted the conversational maxims on behalf of generating implicatures. The meanings of the implicatures they create are varied they depend on the contexts or the situationsunder which the dialogues happened. Based on the results of the study some suggestions are given to the future researchers and to the English lecturers. The future researchers who are going to conduct linguistic studies are suggested to use literary works as the subjects of their studies so that they will be able to comprehend linguistic theories and appreciate literary works at the same time. Similarly the researchers who are going to perform literary study should not study literary works by looking merely on their aesthetic value without considering the linguistic aspects. English lecturers are suggested to use a more interesting teaching media such as movie in explaining linguistic theories so that the class will not be dull and monotonous and the students will feel more interested in studying linguistics.
