Abstract: Fragile X syndrome is the most common cause of inherited mental retardation in humans. People with varying degrees Of mental retardation, long ears, forehead and chins, large testes , large skull and obesity are identified. This syndrome is associated with a fracture of the long arm of the X chromosome (Xq27), that is visible in the spread of metaphase cells cultured in vitro with specific culture.The frequency of this syndrome in humans with different races, 1500 for men and 2500 for women have been reported. The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency of fragile X syndrome among people with mental retardation in the province of Kermanshah. This descriptive study was performed on 35 patients with mental retardation. After preparation of the peripheral blood , lymphocytes cultured in vitro and performed by G-banding. Karyotypes were collected, and 5 people suspected that they have phenotype of fragile X syndrome were analyzed with Molecular technique (PCR). Cultured samples were analyzed with the karyotyping software and Fisher's test was for statistical analysis. Our results showed that none of had the fragile X syndrome.
