Title: Effects of shielding gas at laser beam welding
Abstract: Paper presents inert and active shielding gases for Nd:YAG and CO2 laser welding. Typical shielding gases are ; argon, helium, nitrogen, carbon dioxide and their mixtures. Small aditions of oxygen or carbon dioxide to argon, can increase welding speed and productivity. Influence of shielding gas on plasma formation, welding speed, weld geometry, metallurgy and mechanical properties are discussed. A comparative study on laser beam welding of heat-treatable steels using six shielding gas mixtures based on argon with active oxygen and/or carbon dioxide contents is presented.
