Abstract: The ethics of the psychoanalyst are primarily the ethics of everyone. The peculiarities of the analytic cure and the conditions in which it occurs introduce a specific ethical dimension into the method itself. This paper argues that there is an ethics of the method in its limits and constraints. “Ethical charters” are published by all psychoanalytic societies, yet these are more ontological than ethical, and hardly cover the basis of ethics in psychoanalysis.
