Examples of major drilling technology advances that resulted from optimisation or innovative changes to specific elements of the system include: steerable mud motors, polycrystalline diamond compact bits, synthetic oil-based mud, top-drive system and rotary steerable systems. During the past decade, the oil and gas industry has implemented several new technologies. Among them are: slim-hole drilling, continuous coring drilling, casing driling, liner drilling, underbalanced drilling, coiled-tubing drilling, multi-lateral wells and expandable tubular technology. The development of these technologies was initiated by the industry need to reduce drilling costs, increase production of wells and to enable operators to access reservoirs that could otherwise not be reached economically. This paper describes development, application area, benefits and limitation of only one new technology - casing drilling technology.Read More
