Title: POSIT—An Interactive Timing Optimization Program
Abstract: A window-oriented, microcomputer-based signal optimization program called POSIT (Program for Optimizing Signalized Intersection Timing) has been developed that provides traffic engineers with a friendly and versatile tool for signal timing design at individual intersections. In an evaluation mode, POSIT can generate delay, number of stops, level of service, and fuel consumption values for approach traffic with a given signal timing plan. A check of left turn provision adequacy is also provided. In a design mode, POSIT exhausts all practical timing plans, including all possible phasing arrangements, and suggests an optimum timing plan that minimizes fuel consumption.
