Title: Politeness and Impoliteness in Cross-cultural Communication
Abstract: This paper aims to explore cross-cultural differences related to the conceptualisations and expressions of linguistic (im)politeness. The first part of the paper provides an overview of the most influential politeness theories developed by Grice (1975), Leech (1983) and Brown and Levinson (1987), with an emphasis on the main objections directed at the claim for cross-cultural universality of the proposed models. After a brief discussion of the pragmatics of (im)politeness across varieties of English, the main part of the paper examines differences in politeness strategies and preferred communicative styles within European (Slavic and Romance) and Asian (Japanese and Chinese) societies.
