Title: THE PORTRAYAL OF UNDERMINING POWER IN JAMESDASHNER’S THE MAZE RUNNER : A FOUCAULDIANSTUDY
Abstract: This study attempts to offer Michel Foucault’s power concept about the evidence of undermining power happened in a society. This power circulates among individuals that can be a trigger of resistance to be existed in a society. Resistance is essential to power because if there is no resistance, power will not be able to be exercised. Regarding to those, James Dashner’s The Maze Runner novel is suitable to be analyzed since it portrays the relationship between power and resistance. The researcher used qualitative method to analyze the form of power and the form of resistance as the impact of power existence. This study found that two powers emerge in this novel belong to the owner of a well-established power, namely WICKED, an institution that creates the experiment to find the cure for The Flare, a virus attacking human’s brain. The other power belongs to Thomas, the main character of the novel. WICKED’s power formation is in the form of pressure and monitoring to the Gladers, the society where Thomas lives. On the other hand, Thomas’ power formation lies on his knowledge that transforms his powerless into encouragement. This encouragement meets an agreement with the Gladers. Thus, it leads to form a new power of Thomas to resist against the WICKED. Thus, the novel portrays how undermining power happened in a society caused by the relation between power and resistance.
