Abstract: This article examines some of the mechanisms whereby the state utilizes the schools to disseminate the ideology of state capitalism. A discussion of the hegemonic process at work is followed by an examination of how the corporate sector and the major foundations function as surrogates to help incorporate this ideology into the schools. Of particular concern is how , since early in this century, several influential foundations have sponsored, frequently with the support of or in conjunction with a state agency, important reports and surveys on the direction that American schooling should follow. These reports and surveys, including those currently in vogue, determine the parameters of responsible discussion concerning the direction of schooling; because of their official and semi-official sponsorship, they are guaranteed to fall within margins acceptable to the overarching ideology of state capitalism.
