Title: Serological Response and Efficacy of Live Attenuated Varicella Vaccine
Abstract: The serological response and clinical reaction were studied in 30 healthy children under two years of age who were inoculated with live attenuated varicella vaccine. Five of them received other vaccines simultaneously. Seroconversion rate of varicella neutralizing antibody four weeks after vaccination was 96.7%, geometric mean antibody titer was 9.02. Simultaneous administration with other vaccine did not interfere with the serological response to varicella vaccine. During one year clinical follow-up, no serious reaction to vaccination was found and none of the 30 children contracted varicella. Thirteen children from seven families without history of varicella received varicella vaccine within three days after the index case of varicella appeared at home. Six of them were free from any varicella symptoms, another six presented with countable vesicular rashes without fever, only one case showed ordinary manifestations of varicella. Live attenuated varicella vaccine may prevent or modify varicella if given early after contact with varicella case.
