Title: Toxicity of Jatropha gossypiifolia and Vaccaria pyramidata against freshwater snails vectors of animal schistosomiasis.
Abstract: Toxicity of methanol and n-butanol extracts of unripened seeds of Jatropha gossypiifolia and Vaccaria pyramidata was evaluated against eggs and adults of two species of freshwater snails, Lymnaea luteola and Indoplanorbis exustus. Results indicated that n-butanol extract of J. gossypiifolia was more effective molluscicide than methanol extract against both egg and adult stages of both species of snails. L. luteola eggs were observed to be more susceptible than adults. Different pH conditions ranging from 5.5 to 9.5 could not alter the toxicity of the n-butanol extract of J. gossypiifolia, except for a marginal reduction at higher alkaline pH. The n-butanol extracts of both plants were found to be safe against non-target organisms including freshwater fish Rasbora daniconius, dragonfly nymph Pentala flavecens and mayfly nymph Ephemera vulgata at molluscicidal concentration.
