Abstract: In the previous book, Nuclear Decommissioning, 1st Edition: Planning, Execution, and International Experience, an overview was given on safety and radiation protection aspects pertaining to decommissioning of facilities. The radiation protection principles were highlighted and nonradiation hazards, caused by chemical materials present in the facility, were addressed. Decommissioning experiences from national projects were discussed, with a focus on the regulatory body's aspects; additionally, the role of international organizations with respect to the development of safety and radiation protection was explained, and recent developments were described. In this chapter, aspects of safety and radiation protection for decommissioning of nuclear facilities with a strong focus on planning for decommissioning and safety assessment for decommissioning are addressed; the relation between the preparation of decommissioning plans, the related safety assessment, and risk management are explained to provide a better understanding of decommissioning planning. In that sense this chapter complements the explanations on safety and radiation protection in the previous book. This chapter will also report on recent developments in safety and radiation protection since 2012 and on relevant international lessons learned since that time and by this updated the previous book.
