Title: Diffusion Bonding of Similar and Dissimilar Titanium Alloys
Abstract: TIMETAL®54M (Ti-5Al-4V-0.75Mo-0.5Fe) or Ti-54M is an alpha/beta titanium alloy developed by TIMET. Ti-54M sheets exhibit excellent superplasticity at low temperatures [1]. Therefore, it was of particular interest to evaluate diffusion bonding capability of this alloy at low temperatures as well. Lab scale diffusion couples of 38mm × 51mm were shielded with EB welding in vacuum and bonded using MTS machine. Three titanium alloys, Ti-54M, Ti-6Al-4V (Ti-64) and Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo-0.1Si (Ti-6242S) were diffusion-bonded in a similar and dissimilar alloy combination by varying parameters such as pressure, temperature and time. The bonding interface area was observed using an optical microscope and the % bonding was measured. This paper will present the laboratory procedure for diffusion bonding and provides the results of such bonding for similar and dissimilar titanium alloys. Various metallurgical factors that influence % bonding will also be discussed.
