Title: Taxonomy, nomenclature and feeding behaviour of nematodes in the subfamily Cyathostominae Nicoll, 1927 (Nematoda:Strongylidea) from the horse
Abstract: This study was divided into two main sections, namely the taxonomy and nomenclature of the small strongyles in the large intestine of the horse and an investigation into the diet of the small strongyles with particular reference to the role of ciliate protozoa and blood. The taxonomy and nomenclature of the small strongyle of the horse was reviewed and this study revealed that due consideration has not been given to the correct names for the various genera and species of this group. It is important that the generic name Cyathostomum Molin, 1861 should be regarded as valid and that the generic name Trichonema Cobbold, 1874 should be regarded as its synonym. Cyathostomum tetracanthum (Mehlis, 1831) Molin, 1861 partim, Looss, 1900 should be recognized as the type species of the genus. The subfamily Trichonematinae Railliet, 1916 and the family Trichonematidae Witenberg, 1925 are considered as synonyms of Cyathostominae Nicoll, 1927 and Cyathostomidae Yamaguti, 1961 respectively. Light microscopic and scanning electron microscopic studies revealed distinct morphological differences between the genera and species in the subfamily Cyathostominae and based on these observations a revision of the classification and nomenclature is made, and the following genera, ………
