Title: Diversity of monogeneans (Monopisthocotylea: Dactylogyridae)from freshwater fishes of the Turkana Lake, Kenya: currentstate and prospects
Abstract: During a systematic survey of monogeneans (Dactylogyridae) of
freshwater fishes from the Turkana Lake (Kenya), 34 monogenean
species were recorded on/in 17 species of host fishes.
Twenty-two of them probably represent species new for science.
Twelve species represent previously described taxa and all of
them are reported from Kenya for the first time. The monogenean
species found were represented by the following 12 genera:
Afrocleidodiscus (2 species), Annulotrema (5 species),
Bagrobdella (1 species), Bouixella (1 species), Cichlidogyrus
(3 species), Dactylogyrus (9 species), Dogielius (2 species),
Enterogyrus (4 species), Heterotesia (1 species), Nanotrema (1
species), Protoancylodiscoides (1 species) and Quadriacanthus
(4 species). Most species were collected from the gills of
Labeo horie (7 species of Dactylogyrus and 2 species of
Dogielius). The majority of the monogenean species found were
situated on the gills; the only monogeneans recorded from the
stomach were 4 species of Enterogyrus from fishes of Cichlidae.
Five species of the examined fishes represent new hosts for the
following monogenean species: Clarias gariepinus for
Quadriacanthus aegypticus, Labeo horie for Dactylogyrus
senegalensis, Mormyrus kannume for Bouixella mormyrume,
Sarotherodon galilaeus for Enterogyrus malmbergi and Tilapia
zillii for Enterogyrus coronatus.
