Abstract: I have been writing about art for more than 25 years and often begin by describing as vividly as I can what I saw, imagining a reader sitting perhaps wearily at their kitchen table after dinner being thus enabled to walk through an exhibition in a gallery and experience it while still remaining at home. But description is never enough. Art also needs to be contextualised and located, to be related to other art and to the world surrounding it. This is how it comes to life and is seen as an integral part of being in the world.
