Abstract: We examine the emergence of dowry and other changes in marriage practices since the 1960s in Bangladesh.... We find that the shift from brideprice to dowry the rise in male advantage in the marriage market and the increase in the value of dowry payments have a common demographic cause. The rise of dowry and corresponding changes in other marriage practices have increasingly negative consequences for young women in Bangladesh. (EXCERPT)
