Abstract: The simpler the form of communication used by a connected Thing, the more complex may be that of a connected Thing communicating via the Internet as part of the Internet of Things (IoT). This chapter focuses on Open System Interconnections (OSI) and Transmission Control Protocol/ Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) communication models. The OSI model comprises a communication architecture divided into seven layers namely physical layer, data link layer, network layer, transport layer, session layer, presentation layer and application layer. The TCP/IP model is divided into four layers namely physical layer, data link layer, network layer and transport layer. The basic set of TCP/IP protocols is used for data transfer on the Internet. The software protocols used for the Internet and IoT are conventions setting the structure of the information exchanges necessary to the transfer of the content of application for the end user.
