Title: The Concept of Universal Ethics in Global Networking - Some Examples
Abstract: Globalisation under the impact of Information and Communication Technologies requires increasingly the awareness of our own responsibility towards all humans as well as towards the natural environment and towards future generations. Thus the questions of how to decide and how to act challenge the interdisciplinary research field of Ethics more than ever. But how can different societies and social entities dealing with each other be drawn into such responsible behaviour, that means: into agreeing on one set of ethical rules? A solution to these questions may only be found through a universal ethical concept. As a philosophical solution, K.-O. Apel and J. Habermas (Frankfurt am Main, Germany) developed the concept of Discourse Ethics. It works out the basis for joint moral decisions, which are acceptable to everyone, independent from cultural, social or religious background. It claims for all communication partners to be partners on equal terms. In this paper, these elements of communication and ethics are discussed in some detail. Subsequently they are illustrated by selected examples of ethical rules suggested by different organisations.
