Title: Role of Organisational Structure in Empolyee's Empowerment
Abstract: What is organization structuresThe structure of the organization describes the fonctions, tasks and authorities of the departments, divisions and individual employees and the relationships between them (line of command, communication and procedures). It also describes the number of employees in each division, unit and department. It includes groups of activities which break the formal organizational borders. This structure is reflective of chart formal relations, communication, decision making process, procedures and systems which help organization to develop its duties (tasks) and reach its gouls (Martinez et al., 2011).On the one hand the structure divides departments, divisions and individuals on basis of tasks, functions and authorities. On the other hand the structure coordinates these units through lines of communication and command. Only when the different units work in conjunction, the organization is able to fonction as a whole. The organization structure has to facilitate the different processes in the organization. A general rule of the thumb is that the organization structure should enhance the progress of the processes. It is not recommendable to breakdown processes unnecessarily because of the structure of the organization. The structure has to provide coordination mechanism if the process is divided over more units. This document provides descriptions of typical structures and some guidelines for designing structures.Several factors can be effective in employees' empowerment which in this study, organizational structure has been examined (Vazifedoust,2012). For this purpose, according to Stephen Robbins's theory organizational structure has been defined in three dimensions include:* Formality* Complexity* CentralizationAnd based on Spreitzer theory, employees' empowerment is defined infive dimensions:* Feeling of competency* Sense of autonomy* Sense of trust* Sense of meaningfulness* Feeling of effectivenessTypical structures: Organizations can be structured in different ways (John van Rijn, 2004). Usually the structure is based on splitting and grouping oftasks. The grouping oftasks can be done on basis of 6 different criteria and the final structurels oftena combination of these six criteria:* Outputs (goods/services)* Functions* Target groups* Skills* Geographical areas* Work shiftsSignificance of Organization Structure: The organization structure contributes to the efficient functioning of organization in the following ways.* Clear-cut Authority Relationships* Pattern of Communication* Location of Decision Centers* Proper balancing* Stimulating Creativity* Encouraging Growth* Making use of Technological ImprovementsTypes of Organisation Structure: Different types of Organization structure(Anand & Daft, 2007)canbe created on the basis ofarrangement ofactivities.Accordingly, three broad types of structural forms are :* Functional Structure* Divisional Structure, and* Adaptive StructureFunctional StructureWhen units and sub-units of activities are created in organization on the basis of functions, it is known as functional structure. Thus, in any industrial organization, specialised functions like manufacturing, marketing, finance and personnel constitute as separate units of the organisation. All activities connected with each such function are placed in the same unit. As the volume of activity increases, sub-units are created at lower levels in each unit and the number of persons under each manager at various levels get added. This results in the interrelated positions taking the shape of a pyramid The main advantage of the functional structure of organisation is that there is functional specialization in each unit, which leads to operational efficiency of people engaged, and the organisation as a whole derives the benefit of specialized operations. …
