Summary Breeding and Management of mice: III. The influence of various diets on productivity and growth The standard diet in cube form devised by Bahner for rats and mice was fed in two experiments to a total of 210 male and 480 female mice. In comparison with the English standard breeding diet (diet 41), the cubes proved well suited for intensive growth. Providing the animals with milk to drink increased the number of young, but the increased productivity which resulted did not justify the extra labour involved. Increasing the content of whole milk powder to 20% did not improve the diet so far as breeding was concerned, but it did result in higher weights at weaning when given to monogamous pairs. In two growth experiments in which the standard cubes were compared with diet 41 and with a diet containing a high proportion of whole milk, there were no significant differences in weight gain. It seems possible to develop a simpler and cheaper diet suitable for growth and maintenance. No correlation was found between growth rate and feeding. The causes of losses among the young in general and the reasons why the dams eat their young are discussed.
