Bei Anwendung der Beobachtungsmethode ist die vorgängige Ausarbeitung eines geeigneten Messkonzepts zwingend vorgeschrieben. Gängige Messinstrumente werden beschrieben und es werden Hinweise auf den Messbereich und zu den typischen Genauigkeiten (Messunsicherheit) gegeben. Vor- und Nachteile bei der Auswahl bestimmter Messprinzipien werden aufgezeigt. Die Erstellung von Bauwerken erfordert grundlegende Kenntnisse der geomechanischen und geohydraulischen Kennwerte. Gezielte Feldversuche (In-situ-Tests), die entsprechend instrumentiert sind, ergänzen die geotechnischen Laborversuche und geben Aufschluss über die örtlichen Verhältnisse. Dies besonders im Hinblick auf Heterogenitäten, wie sie im Baugrund häufig vorhanden sind. Schichtabfolgen mit unterschiedlichen mechanischen Eigenschaften oder Grundwasserständen können dadurch besser eingegrenzt werden. Zahlreiche Fallbeispiele von Bauvorhaben geben Hinweise für geotechnische Instrumentierungen und Monitoring in der praktischen Anwendung.
