Title: The role of agricultural technology in poverty reduction among crop farmers in Ohaji Area of Imo State, Nigeria
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to assess the role of agricultural technology in poverty reduction among crop farmers in Ohaji Area of Imo state. Since a study of this nature has not been conducted among the respondents in the study area, it is hoped that both students and other researchers will find this work useful. One hundred and twenty (120), farmers were randomly selected from four communities that were used for the study. Questionnaire was used for data collection. Data were analyzed using frequency distribution, percentage and mean. Results shows that most of the respondents because of use of improved technology, farmers socioeconomic status improved as seen in yield increases, more income from sales, visits to healthcare centres in city, ability to pay children school fees, purchase of valuable items and other benefits. The result of the study revealed that the respondents made reasonable gain from sales of the product and that crop farming is a profitable venture. The major constraints militating against crop farming were asses to land, low income, low level of education and high cost of available input. Based on the major findings, the following recommendations were made; Fertilizer and pesticide should be provided to crop farmers by government, NGOs and other forms of organizations, proper storage fertilities should also be provided to enable the farmers plant and store more products, modernized farming should be encouraged and government policy should be structured to assist the farmers to boost crop production.
