Abstract: In January 1968 one-way operation of a pair of parallel north/south streets was instituted in Dunedin. The scheme was designed to provide a high level of traffic service to the major traffic generators in the central area. A linked traffic-signal system ensured the free flow of traffic, and channellisation and road signs and markings were designed to high standards. The scheme eliminated delays and congestion for traffic on the north/south corridor, and nearly doubled the speed over one formerly congested portion. Traffic accidents were significantly reduced and the level of traffic service has been raised at a very economical cost, and with minimum disturbance of the areas through which it passes.
