Abstract: The sequence of kidneys formed in birds is similar to that in mammalian embryos, i.e. the intermediate mesoderm gives rise to the nephrogenic mesenchyme, pronephros, mesonephros and metanephros. The way in which the nephric duct lengthens to reach the cloaca is discussed, together with its role in inducing the metanephric duct and, in consequence, the metanephric kidney. Comparisons are made between the metanephric kidney in birds and mammals.
