Title: Novel Report of Banded Chlorosis in Commercial Sugarcane Cultivars from Sub-Tropical India
Abstract: Sugarcane is a long duration crop experiencing extreme weather conditions like winter, summer and rainy season during its life cycle. The crop faces numbers of biotic and abiotic stresses during their entire growth period. The effect of abiotic stresses especially temperature was observed in large area of sugarcane. Banded chlorosis caused by cold injury (Physiological disorder) and their symptom appears due to a sudden drop in temperature in this crop. Symptoms of banded chlorosis were scattered uniformly on a parallel height of the cane from the ground level. The symptoms were highly appeared at the average temperature of 5.250C with the range from 2.7 to 70C in last week of January, 2016. The extensive variation of symptoms observed from 4 to 80 percent in various commercial cultivars. A novel physiological disorder banded chlorosis is hereby reported particularly on various popular sugarcane commercial cultivars at Sugarcane Research Institute, Shahjahanpur (UP) which is situated in sub-tropical region of North India. Bands gradually remove automatically from affected leave at later stages. Banded chlorosis may not affect the crop yield and other plant mechanism due to short time of appearance. Thus, the cane growers should not apply any substance on this havoc.
