Agriculture dominance in employment has gradually weaned in favour of services and this to a considerable extent mirrors the changing structure of the economy. The public sector has also lost its status as the main source of formal sector employment to the private sector due to a shift in economic policy paradigm that de-emphasized direct role of government in economic activities. Informality however remains very high with almost 9 of every 10 people employed engaged in the informal sector. The battle against unemployment, vulnerable employment, and working poverty still ranges on with no coordinated policies to address these challenges. This chapter analyses employment and other labour market issues in Ghana over the last sixty years and overviews polices related to the labour market and labour regulations and industrial relations in the country.Read More
