Title: Students' Perception about Professional Courses: A Study in Kolkata and Its Suburbs
Abstract: IntroductionThere are a lot of educational institutions in India offering Full time and Part time professional courses mushrooming here and there in various parts of the country. Students belonging from different educational and cultural background may have different perceptions towards higher education particularly expectations related to teaching and learning. Students' approach and orientation to education may further affect their academic decisions, expectations, and performance.Also the magnificent advertisements that crop up every day in the newspapers lure the students to get admissions in one of them. But often the course fees of many such professional courses lie beyond the financial capacity of the middle and the lowermiddle class section of the society. Lots of lucrative bank loans are also available to fulfill the dreams of aspiring students. Students are running after professional courses in the expectation of getting absorbed in renowned companies to maintain the status quo. This paper highlights the comparison between full time and part time courses. This paper also attempts to investigate aspects of the lifestyles, expectations and attitudes of undergraduate students opting for professional courses for their higher education. The recent changes in higher education scenario in India have been utterly fast, phenomenal and will continue to be inevitable. Private participation in professional education (especially management education, which is the most sought after option) has brought changes in the perception of the society in general and students in particular, that education services are transforming into a business activity rather being a welfare activity. Thus, the market forces will decide, whether private Brands in higher education will survive, excel or deteriorate. The study explores the expectation and perception of students regarding quality and support services in their institute. It seeks to provide an insight to the responsibility of the entrepreneurs and policy makers of higher education by highlighting the different perceptions of students at both the levels and would thereby aid in ensuring an impeccable higher education system where the education is quality oriented.Objectives1. To analyse the perception and attitude of students towards full time and part time courses.2. To find whether duration of course depends on the fee structure.3. To find out whether duration of course depends on the opinion regarding job guarantee.4.To find out whether there exists any relationship between gender and opinion regarding job guarantee.5. To examine and analyze the most important factors for selecting a course.Apart from the above mentioned objectives, the authors have also tried to find out the important reasons for pursuing professional course. The research paper also critically analyzes the attitude towards migrating to other cities instead of Kolkata. Finally the authors have also cited the most attractive sectors as per the opinion of respondents.Theoretical Foundation of the StudySince the paper is based more or less on the present scenario of educational system and how students perceive it, the paper under study would not be complete if it does not get its platform from the study of educational pattern and system from ancient India. In ancient India, every child has to go to 'ashrama' where he would receive education. It was supposed to be the re-birth of the child and was known as 'Dvijya'. Sanskrit was the language used for teaching. The academies of higher learning were known as 'Parisads'. The education system involved of three basic processes, which included 'Sravana', 'Manana' and ' Nidhyasana'. In ancient India women were given the equal right to education and teaching. It was mainly the Brahmins followed by Kshatriyas that received education at the Gurukuls while the boys from the lower caste learnt their family trade from their fathers. …
