Abstract: Epithelial ovarian cancer encompasses several distinct histological subtypes, including mucinous carcinoma. Mucinous ovarian tumors comprise a range of neoplasms that represent a progression from benign to malignant tumors. These include benign mucinous cystadenomas, borderline mucinous tumors, and invasive mucinous adenocarcinomas. Dramatic changes in the pathological approach of ovarian mucinous neoplasms have occurred recently, and it is now recognized that the majority of mucinous carcinomas that were historically diagnosed as primary ovarian cancers were, in fact, metastatic implants from other sites. As mucinous ovarian cancer represents the smallest percentage of all epithelial ovarian cancer, diagnostic challenges have been encountered and prospective data to guide treatment recommendations are sparse. Compared to serous ovarian cancer, there are several notable differences in the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of mucinous tumors. This chapter will review the classification, presentation, and evaluation of mucinous ovarian cancer in general, as well as describe in focused detail prognosis and treatment.
