The main argument used in the paper is that the Syrian civil war is not a conventional civil war, but an internationalized civil war or a proxy war. Syrian civil war should be classified as an internationalized civil war for two main reasons. Firstly, because of interference in the war from outside actors, be that in the form of direct military intervention or by financially sponsoring some of the numerous participants in the fights. Outside actors are usually states, but also non-state actors such as various militant or terrorist groups. Secondly, Syrian civil war is internationalized because of spillover effect which causes the fighting to spread to territories of other states. Being that many other states such as the United States, Russia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey and Israel have all at some point directly or indirectly participated in the war, and additionally that spillover effect has spread the conflict to territories of Iraq, Jordan, Turkey and Lebanon, the author concludes that Syrian civil war is indeed an internationalized civil war or a proxy war.Read More
