Title: Optimized Lignite‐fired Power Plants with Post‐combustion CO 2 Capture
Abstract: The aim of this work is to evaluate the performance of a lignite fired steam power plant integrating Carbon Capture and Sequestration technologies (CCS). The CCS technologies under investigation in the current work are the chemical absorption with amines which is applied to a greenfield plant, and a hybrid application of oxyfuel in conjunction with amine scrubbing (ECO –Scrub) which is applied as a retrofitting option aiming to minimise the requirements for both boiler and steam turbine redesign implied by the application of CO2 capture techniques while reducing the energy efficiency penalty. Post combustion CO2 capture is considered to dominate in the demonstration period of the CCS application, after 2015. Due to the resulting efficiency penalty, it is of utmost importance to apply any available measure to improve the power plant's performance. Several options to increase the energy efficiency of the plant are presented including waste heat integration. The optimisation options of the thermodynamic design, of both greenfield and retrofitting amine scrubbing applications are presented.
