Title: Bildungsbezogene Partnerwahl nach der Scheidung: Beständigkeit oder Abweichungen gegenüber der ersten Ehe?
Abstract: This paper contributes to our understanding of repartnering after divorce in two novel ways. First, we link patterns of educational assortative mating after divorce with partner choices in first marriages. Second, our study explicitly includes a marriage market measure that captures education specific mating opportunities after divorce. We apply competing risks event history models to a rich, new data source called “Divorce in Flanders/ Scheiding in Vlaanderen” (N = 2,001). Marriage market measures are derived from the first wave of the Belgian Generations and Gender Survey. Our results indicate that (a) educational homogamy is weaker in new matches made after divorce than in first marriages, (b) women in particular tend to choose partners being educationally similar to their first marriage partners, and (c) divorced men are more likely to re-partner with highly educated women as a result of the increased supply of such singles in the marriage market.
