Abstract: ENZO GIANNINI ISTITUTO GEOLOGIA DELUUNIVERSITA DI snnu Lineamenti Geologici delle Alpi Apuane (cox OTTO FIGURE NEL TESTO) Le Alpi Apuane sono un gruppo montuoso, la cui suggestiva bellezza, di aspetto veramente alpino, ha sempre colpito chiunque, percorrendo la pianura della Versilia e costeggiando i1 mare, 1e ha viste, alte e solenni, incombenti, chiudere verso Est 1'o1‘izzonte come 1‘incomparabi1e serie di quinte di uno scenario sovrumano. Ancor pill note sono Ie Apuane per le numerose e pregiate varieta di marmi. Bastera citare a questo proposito il bardiglio, i cipollini Verdi e rossi, la breccia medicea di Seravezza ecc. In particolare, celeberrimo fino da11'antichita, il marmo statuario bianco; usato in ogni tempo dai piii grandi scultori, tra cui Michelangelo, e ancora oggi largamente espor- tato in tutti i paesi ed e giustamente ritenuto il miglior materiale da scultura del mondo. Celebrare la bellezza di questa terra, decantare 1e qualita dei marmi di queste montagne, non e pero nostro compito. Scopo di questa conferenza e di illustrare i lineamenti geologici delle Apuane e cioe descrivere i principali elementi architettonici di questo edificio, opera della natura, e raccontarne a grandi linee la storia. Prima di iniziare questa descrizione e questa storia E2 opportuno definire i limiti geografici delle Apuane e fare un cenno alle loro dirnensioni. I1 Massiccio apuano ha confini geografici quasi ovunque piuttosto netti: dal lato occidentale, i1 limite che corre in direzione SSE-NNW, coin- cide con la pianura costiera (dal paese di Vecchiano, sul Serchio, fino circa a11’a1tezza di Luni) e con la larga pianura alluvionale del basso corso della Magra (da Luni fino a S. Stefano); fra S. Stefano ed Aulla esso segue ancora il corso della Magra, con direzione approssima- tivamente SW—NE, poi il Corso de1l’Au1e11a (con direzione W-E) fino
